COCONUT ISLAND

If you've never dreamt about living on a Coconut Island, the image is certain to have passed your eyes ! Coconut palms reaching out from dense green foliage over an azure sea, pictures of lively crustaceans wriggling to free themselves from a divers grip, or pretty little fish swimming in shoals of hundreds, all well ordered as they ply through the crystal clear water, the shoal splitting around obstacles then regrouping as though by divine ordinance.

The Emblem

The cartoon depicting palm trees swaying in the breeze reminds me of happy days spent in sun and sea. There are certainly more serious moments as one shall aspire to command the desolation of this tropical paradise.

SV Charlotte

SV Charlotte was launched in Durban in September of 1996. She was built in Milnerton in the Cape  from 1989 to 1993 when she was taken to Durban by road for further completion. In Durban the mast, motor and deck gear were fitted along with the electrics, plumbing, steering and navigational instruments.

Her first serious voyage was her delivery to Richards Bay during 1998.  Since then many exciting adventures and some longer voyages were undertaken.

Charlotte has since been home to a family of five. When Sue was employed by Yacht Services at Zululand Yacht Club in Richards Bay we decided to live on Charlotte as it meant that Sue could walk to work. It also meant that we would meet many people from all over the world. Cruisers who were hurrying back to their homelands because they had a limited budget, cruisers who were retired without any needs other than to exist and cruisers who lived from hand to mouth as they moved from place to place in their will to survive.

Charlotte needed quite a lot of work in the way of panelling, painting and maintenance. In between going to work attending to our children's needs and carrying out regular maintenance, I was tempted to sail her as regularly as possible. We had the wednesday night series and a bi-weekly series which was seasonal.
